QUEZON CITY, Philippines โ€” Dr. Garner Algo L. Alolod, faculty member of the College of Fisheries and the current Director for Research, Extension, and Innovation, represented the Foreign Graduate Scholars in delivering an inspiring testimonial speech during the In Touch With Excellence (ITWE) 2025 ceremony of the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), at The Blue Leaf Cosmopolitan, Quezon City on October 7, 2025.

Dr. Alolod, who completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Marine Biosciences at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) through the DOST Foreign Graduate Scholarship (FGS) program, shared his remarkable journey from being a โ€œbarrio kidโ€ from Culasi, Antique, to earning his PhD in Japan.

โ€œEverything was new to me. From skyscrapers to cashless payments and navigating Tokyoโ€™s subwaysโ€”it was overwhelming. But I reminded myself that giving up was never an option. My government invested so much in me; I had to fight the tears and get the diploma no matter what,โ€ he recalled.

His fascination with molecular science led him to pursue advanced research in fisheries and aquaculture, focusing on shrimp disease characterization at the molecular level.

In his message of gratitude, Dr. Alolod expressed deep appreciation to DOST-SEI for supporting his academic journey.

โ€œYou are not just providing scholarships; you realize dreams and shape the future. Your generosity empowers individuals like me to better our position in this world and change lives in real and lasting ways,โ€ he added.

Moreover, as he addressed his fellow scholar-graduates, Dr. Alolod emphasized the importance of service and patriotism.

โ€œOur learnings and skills should not just serve our intentions; letโ€™s utilize them for the common good, for science is for the people. Our coming back to the Philippines, staying, and serving are not just for complianceโ€”it is patriotism,โ€ he further emphasized.
